Glossary Term:

Definition:

A polyhierarchy includes nodes (or vertices or leaves in a tree) that have more than one parent node (or vertex or branch). Of course in a natural tree each leaf belongs to a single branch.

In a ClassificationScheme?, the subordination of a class under more than one superordinate class is called cross-classification.

Most taxonomies are simple tree structures or monohierarchies.

Information architects should know that there are structures that impose some order on polyhierarchies (sometimes called entangled hierarchies). These include Faceted Classification and Lattices.

When content is reused, it necessarily appears in more than one place in the website hierarchy.

Do not confuse polyhierarchy with MultipleHierarchies?.

    Related Terms: Taxonomy, Faceted Classification
