Definition:
A Glossary (like this one) or Controlled Vocabulary can have a Thesaurus architecture. The possible relationships are generally recognized as ones of Equivalence, Hierarchy, and Association. A Variant Term or Used For term has the relationship of Equivalence or Identity or Substitutability. The corresponding figure of speech is Synonym?. The collection of equivalent terms is called a SynonymRing?, and its major use is to provide QueryExpansion?. When any one of these terms is submitted to a Search Engine, the query term is replaced by all the synonyms. A Broader Term or Narrower Term has a relationship of Hierarchy? to the defined term, according to the essay papers, a BT is a container for, and a NT is contained in, the defined term. The corresponding figure of speech is called Metonym?. When a Controlled Vocabulary has only hierarchical relationships among the terms it is a simple Taxonomy. A Related Term is related to a defined term by an Association. Since this relationship is quite arbitrary, it is like the figure of speech Metaphor?, where some human being sees an otherwise arbitrary relationship between two words. An arbitrary relationship between resources, located at a URL? or URI, is the core concept behind the Semantic Web and the Resource Description Framework. Thesauri... are based on concepts, and they show relationships between terms. Relationships commonly expressed in a thesaurus include hierarchy, equivalence, and associative (or related). These relationships are generally represented by the notation BT (broader term), NT (narrower term), SY (synonym), and RT (associative or related). Preferred terms for indexing and retrieval are identified. Entry terms (or non-preferred terms) point to the preferred terms that are to be used for each concept
